Trumpeter, Composer, Arranger, Teacher
Born in Chicago and raised in New York, at the age of fifteen Mike won the Erie Music Teachers Contest and the following year began his professional career with the Erie Philharmonic Orchestra and the Eastern Phiharmonic (1971). He was awarded a Bachelor of Music in Theory from the Eastman School of Music in 1977 where, as a member of the Eastman Jazz Ensemble he performed with many celebrated guests such as Randy Brecker, Stan Getz, Bill Evans, Bill Watrous, Lew Soloff, and many others. While in Rochester he played with Isaac Hayes, The Temptations, and regularly with the Rochester Philharmonic and with Chuck Mangione. Further study ensued with Armando Ghitalla (Boston Sym.), Adolf Holler (Vienna Phil.), Thomas Stevens (L.A. Phil.), and Mel Broiles (Met. Opera). In Washington D.C. he was a member of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra from 1978 to 1982, while also performing with many of the finest conductors and orchestras such as Leonard Berstein, Lorin Maazel, Daniel Barenboim, L’Orchestre de Paris, and the Metropolitan Opera. In addition to solo and chamber music work he also maintained a busy teaching schedule at the D.C. Youth Orchestra Program and at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Having moved overseas to Rome in 1983 Mike has performed as first solo trumpet with various symphonic and chamber orchestras, among them the International Chamber Orchestra, the Centro Italiano della Musica Antica, the Camerata Strumentale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestra Sinfonica del Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma, and currently with the Roma Sinfonietta and the Italian Film Orchestra (of which he is a founding member). In the jazz field he is reputed to be one of the top lead trumpets in Italy, guiding jazz bands like the Roma Jazz Ensemble and the television/radio orchestras of the RAI (state owned) and private Mediaset channels. He has worked with most of Italy’s finest jazz artists and has toured in Europe with Gil Evans, Bobby Brookmeyer, and Zucchero Fornaciari (with whom he also played at the Kremlin and at Woodstock ’94). As an arranger he has worked in television, theatre, and in the studio with many recording artists, among them Gloria Gaynor, Thelma Houston, Pino Daniele, Zucchero, Giorgia, and with Alex Britti at the 2003 San Remo Song Festival. As a soloist he has recorded with scores of singer-songwriters. He has recorded on hundreds of records and movie soundtracks, and his work is often specifically requested by many composers, especially Ennio Morricone and Nicola Piovani. In recent years he has toured with Natalie Cole for her European performances. At this time he directs various professional and student jazz big bands for which he composes and arranges the entire repertoire. The ecclectic characteristics of this musician can be clearly heard in their entertaining concerts. Very dedicated to teaching, Mike teaches privately and holds trumpet masterclasses and clinics throughout Italy, and is currently professor of Jazz Arranging and director of the Jazz Orchestra at the Conservatory of Music in L’Aquila.

John Eth plays CTR-628R & CFL-620R
Terry Townson plays CTR-520T(raw finishing)
I am a seasoned professional having made my living playing the trumpet for
over 30 years.
I’ve enjoyed playing most all the major brands of horns.
A short time ago I was introduced to CarolBrass. I was blown away! The
response, feel and overall sound of these horns is truly amazing.
Big core quality sound throughout the range of the horn… from “C” to
The valves are the smoothest and most comfortable I’ve ever played.
I like playing raw brass horns and as we all know you can’t hide poor
workmanship when you don’t plate them. These CarolBrass horns are
pristine in every facet of assembly. The tuning slides and solder joints are
clean and smooth, with absolutely no tension anywhere on these horns.
I LOVE playing my new CarolBrass horns.

The Terry Townson Carol Brass Compilation
The featured of the performance on this track are the following CarolBrass instruments:
Tenor Trombone - CTB-6219-YSS-YNN-33
Piccolo Trumpet - CPC-3330-YLS
Flugel - CFL-820R
Bb Trumpet - CTR-520T
in order of appearance – Trombone, Piccolo Trumpet, Flugel, Muted Trumpet & open Trumpet.
Here’s what Peter Uppman had to say about his first CarolBrass instrument – a CTR-500T (Note these are now referred to as model CTR-5000L-YST).
“I’ve been a professional trumpet player for nearly 3 decades, am always striving to become better as a performer and the equipment I play on is of critical importance.
Having played, owned and loved some truly great instruments during this time, I consider myself extremely fortunate to have found a set of horns that I don’t just love performing on, but ones which make me smile every time I do so.
My Carol 500T Bb trumpet reminds me of the many great Calicchio’s I used to own…, only better!!
I don’t just state, “This is yet another great trumpet”, but I’m saying.., “Wow! This horn is perfect for me and makes music even more enjoyable… and easier too!”
This is certainly a commercial bright-sounding instrument, not nasally or harsh, but with a beautiful rich core to the sound. Like any instrument, mouthpiece choice will make a big difference in tonality.
Intonation is impeccable, the stainless steel valves super-fast and the quality of workmanship is superb.
What really impresses me most of all with this trumpet, is its fantastic responsiveness – the sound has a sparkling aura when pushed, and a beautiful richness to the middle register. You don’t need super lungs to make it sing, just a gentle airstream and POW; the note’s immediately right where you want it to be, without locking in too much.
This trumpet really does make playing music so much easier for me, and not only have my audiences noticed and commented, but my peers in the music industry have as well.
That is what a great playing trumpet can help do for you too.”
Peter Uppman – Melbourne, Australia
